In addition to its 7 sub-ophthalmic divisions, Chengdu AIER East Eye Hospital also operates a not-for-profit department of eye bank.

Chengdu AIER East Eye Bank, the former Sichuan Red Cross Eye Bank, has always been vigorously promoting the spirits of Humanism, Fraternity and Dedication in pushing development of cornea donation in our country. AIER East Eye Bank works to organize and establish cornea data management, obtain and distribute eye organ tissues for transplant surgeries. Our Eye Bank team takes great responsibility not only in raising the public awareness and developing the corneal donor community but also strict in tissue restoring, evaluation, distribution, and using in scientific research and teaching.

AIER East Eye Bank is equipped with ambulance and a professional team. It cooperates with other eye banks and hospitals in achieving interaction and emergency distribution of eye tissue for patients in different locations.

China homes about 4 million corneal blindness patients, with 100,000 new patients adding to count every year. Most of them are able to restore sight by cornea transplantation. However, in China the concept of organ donation is not as accepted in Western countries.

With unceasing efforts of our Eye Bank, more people have registered as cornea donors. AIER East Eye Bank is often able to support corneal transplantation surgeries in other AIER hospitals.
