Beware! Winter Colds May Induce Viral Keratitis

Winter is right around the corner. Viral keratitis is often seen in a season when winter colds prevail. Viral Keratitis is the viral infection of the cornea, clinically often presenting as Herpes simplex keratitis. Usually the herpes virus is parasitic on eyes, nose and throat. When catching a cold, the body immunity decreases and herpes virus induces keratitis showing symptoms of eye pain, impaired eyesight, photophobia (light sensitivity), red eye and a 'gritty' sensation.

Treatment usually involves using of eye drops in mild cases. However, severe cases need specialized treatment to prevent it from aggravation. In the worse condition when corneal perforation occurs, corneal transplantation may be necessary. Early diagnosis and early treatment can effectively prevent corneal scar and vision impairment.

AIER doctors suggest physical workout in winter is a good way to strengthen body immunity.
Keep warm and avoid catching cold. If your cold is sluggish in recovery, be aware of viral keratitis.
Once symptoms show up, visit an eye doctor. Add more fresh vegetables to diet also helps.
